After a protracted battle, I have finally finished this mammoth book. Battle is not really the right word, because I immensely enjoyed reading this book. It's just such an intensely long volume with long sections on agricultural practices or local politics that I would lose interest in and then give up the book entirely for months. Now that I've read it, I'm excited to return to the sections I really enjoyed: Kitty and Levin's courtship, the first meetings of Vronsky and Anna, Kitty's time at the spa. I hate to say I will skip Levin's long thoughts on the best agricultural practices for his land, because I was glad to have read them at the time and now. They are just still interminably boring. This book is such a perfect snapshot of the lives of the characters, it often doesn't feel like a novel, but a factual description of things that really happened. Each character manages to be deeply sympathetic as well as flawed, much like real life. Levin, with his idiosycrancies, self-insight, his deep love, and intense passions, in particular, really captured my heart. I can see completely why this book is a classic and I look forward to reading it again.

Ich bin mit großen Erwartungen an diesen Roman getreten und wurde leicht enttäuscht. Alles in einem lässt sich sagen, dass die erste Hälfte um einiges stärker als die Zweite ist, mit Ausnahme des Dritten Teils. Vor allem nach der Hochzeit, die an sich schon sehr schnell abgefrühstückt wurde, wird alles nochmals einen Ticken langsamer und langatmiger. Generell kann man anbringen, dass Anna Karenina in einem Buch mit ihrem Namen als Titel vergleichsweise wenig vom Rampenlicht erhält, und ihr Ende auch vergleichsweise kurz dargestellt wird. Ich habe die erste Hälfte sehr gemocht, da hier noch durch Glanz und Gloria der Aristokratie alles schön eingerahmt wurde, während die letzten zwei Teile stark auf Gesellschaftskritik gehen und im kompletten Achten Teil nach Anna's Tod nur noch ein "Happily ever after" abgezeichnet wird.
