CAWPILE rating says this should be 4 stars, but I'm bumping it up to ★★★★★ for The Mona Lisa and Human Weakness. Probably my favourites of all the Halo fiction I've read. This collection is worth giving a shot just for those tbh.

An eclectic collection of Halo stories ranging from mediocre to almost gripping. Some of my favorite sci-fi authors are present and do a good job, but little grabs me in quite the same way as the longer novels. Worth reading, but have realistic expectations.

‘Halo Evolutions’ is a collection of 11 novellas that gives the reader further insight into Halo lore. What makes most of these stories so satisfying is that you don’t expect them to end the way they do, and those whom you desire to survive don’t always survive. Other times, their survival is ambiguous. This is a mark of excellent writing—when the reader predicts one thing to happen, but an entirely different outcome comes completely out of left field and surprises you. I have a hard time enjoying a book, or a novella, where my predictions come true, so it’s a delight that not only were my predictions always wrong, but also I didn’t know what to predict in other stories because the narrative was just that compelling.
If you’re like me and like to read the Halo books in chronological order, it’s difficult to say where to place this in the timeline since each novella takes place at different points in the timeline. But after a little research, most suggest reading this after ‘First Strike,’ or at least after playing Halo 4 since most of the stories take place during the Human-Covenant War while others take place directly after. That being said, this is not a required book to fully understand what’s going on in the Halo universe; you can do quite well without it. Basically, what “Rogue One” is to Star Wars, ‘Halo Evolutions’ is to Halo. That being said, it’s a fun book to read, especially for big Halo fans with the delicious bits of lore it gives.
