I didn't like any of the characters,  was frustrated that the key event for everything (the upload to the broader internet)going wrong hasn't happened, the multiple paragraphs about nipples, and oh, the fact I felt more for the witch than I didn't the town. Also, the scene with Jaiden and the exacto knife stick already left a gross taste in my mouth when Fletcher got killed. Not to mention the SA scene, the nipple obsession, the misogyny,  racism, etc, etc.

Made it half way through… The idea of the witch all chained up, with her eyes and mouth sewn shut just randomly haunting the town was interesting and unsettling, and the way the townies tried to live normal lives around her and camouflaged her from visitors made for my favourite take-away from the whole story.

But the writing style, the characters, the misogyny all put me off. This is one of those books that’s written a little like watching a movie: the action is described but there’s no additional value to the text. The character work didn’t go deep either, and especially the ‘police’ guy came off annoying and incompetent. I skimmed ahead to see how it ends and feel no need to stick around for the rest of the journey.

This is a solid book! A fascinating story full of terror, love, heartbreak and most importantly- the evil of mankind!
Good f&cking book! Definitely not for the faint of heart but damn- my heart hurts after reading this!

Up until the last chapter every character made me think "wow, you can really tell this was written in 2012 by a guy- the bigotry did not age well" and then the ending happened and made everything make sense and I was so pleased while simultaneously being horrified. Highly recommend!
