Much better than the first book in the series! In this book the characters seem less juvenile and there's more action. There's also less "funny" lines that aren't actually funny. Much more enjoyable! Made it worth reading the first one.

Seizure (Virals #2) by Kathy Reichs

I LOVE this series! It’s like Nancy Drew meets Maximum Ride. Seizure is the second book in the YA Virals series by Kathy Reichs author of the Temperance Brennan (Bones) novels. This series is inventive, intelligent and fun.

In Virals Tory and her friends are infected with a genetically altered parvo virus that affects their DNA and gives them special powers.

In Seizure the gang is still trying to get the hang of what is happening to their bodies as well as searching for Anne Bonny’s pirate treasure.

I truly cannot wait for the next installment.

Tory Brennan's narrative seems to be developing as her story does which makes continuing to read Kathy Reichs' YA books a pleasure. The pirate theme of this book in her Virals series was fabulous. I loved following the clues on their treasure hunt. All said, Seizure was a very fun read & Aunt Tempe's cameo appearance was just what the doctor ordered.

Like:
- the 2nd book in the series (can read the first, first, but you don't need to as this book gives you a brief recap at the beginning)
- Something for the whole family (my mom was listening to bits of the audiobook and kept asking about the parts she missed)
- Relatable characters - strong, inquisitive, smart, speaks their mind, the kind of people you could see yourself being friends with and going on an adventure
- A young adult novel (featuring teens as the main characters) that both adults and teen readers would enjoy

Love:
- great mix of historical fiction, mystery and science fiction
- Keeps my attention throughout
- A quick reading style, despite being almost 500 pages
- Read this in 2 days; that's crazy quick but I loved it!
- The writing is so captivating. I was completely drawn into the world that the author created.
- Temperance Brennan, Tory's aunt and world renowned scientist from the author's adult fiction series, makes an appearance in this book - super fun when there's a crossover

Dislike: ---

Wish that:
- I had read her Virals Series earlier. It's seriously great!
- Personally, I would like a bit more focus on the science heavy aspects of the book

Overall, an amazing second book in the Virals series. I can't wait to read the rest soon. A great mix of genres: mystery, suspense, historical fiction, and science fiction to create the perfect book. Don't let the length intimidate you, Seizure is a very quick read!

The concept of this series is "cute" - a bunch of nerdy, misfit, "sciency" kids bond together through an unknown illness. It's a spin-off from Reichs's Temperance Brennan (aka "Bones") series. Although this is a young adult novel, there is liberal use of some soft-swearing, which is not necessary. Otherwise, it's "just okay".

I absolutely adore this series! While, at times, I mock the decisions that the characters make, and how the story has fault in obvious character tropes and teen stereotyping, their personalities, humour and story line are rather quite enjoyable to get lost in. While the "mystery" aspect of the story presents some downfall towards the groups avoidable and somewhat forced actions, the bond between the characters makes up for typical teen "whoopsies, I'm young and didn't think about that" moments. On the topic of the characters personalities and individualistic charm, as a whole, they all make you long for the bond the group of them have together. Jealousy of their bond couldn't quite touch the feeling. It's no surprise that you are easily enticed to go along with whatever adventure and danger they come across regardless of pre-disposed doubt. With each book, it seems that whatever you originally anticipate will continually be challenged. While there are some flaws, the book is no doubt a great read.

It’s not that I don’t love the premise of this series (or even this book); I really do. Fearless, smart, resourceful teenagers that stop crimes and solve mysteries seem so cool. But when they have lucky break after lucky break or Tory has revelation after revelation, it gets to the point of both “where can this go next” and “oh, I saw that coming” level of incredulity.

Seizure kind of picks up where Virals finishes. The pack of Virals are still trying to figure out their powers, fearful of being caught and hauled in for scientific research, and are devastated to learn that the factor keep them together, Loggerhead Island, is about to be shut down forcing them all to move away. Tory gets this bright scheme to find lost treasure and somehow - and this got old really quickly - convinces the whole pack to follow her. TBH, the whole book kind of goes in a “Tory gets an idea, the others hate it, Tory wheedles them into doing it, everyone sees how smart she is and vows never to mistrust her again…” cycle.

Back to the Virals. Like any good friendship, they have their disagreements over how things should be carried out through the book but in the end they’re all there for each other. This I liked, I mean there’s nothing better than a tight friendship to keep drama away! And speaking of drama, there is the whole unnecessary part of cotillion in this book. The only purpose that it could have ostensibly served is as a venue for Tory to figure out her powers but the bitch-out sessions between Tory and the tripod-of-skank, though sometimes satisfying to read (I mean I love me a good roast), did nothing for the plot and I would have been more interested in mystery solving.

However, even the mystery solving got laid on a bit too thickly. Every lead that the Virals think of is correct and no matter what, they always succeed. Sure the author tried to inject failure into the plot by making them go on a bajillion step hunt with what seems like the treasure never actually being the treasure, but his in and of itself was a problem. By the third or so false ending, I just wanted them to find the fucking treasure already and talk about how saving Loggerhead Island was going to go. On top of all this, the Virals manage to sneak out every night and each morning they all exclaim “OMG we’re so lucky we didn’t get caught” and I thought that since it seemed suspicious that they were so lucky, it was going to come up later that their stalkers had been keeping their parents asleep or something but no, they really were just lucky which was disappointing.

Okay so this review sounds like I didn’t like the book but I did. Seizure’s fault is in taking everything to the extreme where at some point it is not so much interesting anymore as “ugh.” Still, despite this, there’s an addictive quality to this series. I do hope book three is a bit more like the first in realness.
