Didn't like any of the characters!
The main one was just horrible! Yes, she suffered and the first crime was justified... The second one? Not so much... It was just plain vendetta! And all that show of faking dementia? HATED that!
slow-paced

Absolutely loved this book and it’s riveting plot!

I’m often interested to know what inspires authors in their writing - in this case it was a shoebox containing her Great-Aunt’s wartime letters and two giggling elderly ladies who offered glimpses of their wartime lives. Combining this with her own research, the author has successfully penned a debut novel that I would highly recommend without any hesitation.

Evelyn/Eva is a warm, witty and very likeable character. Her life story - from the immediate post-WW2 years through to her final months in an elderly residential home - made a fascinating storyline and a very enjoyable read.

An excellent debut novel from Suzanne Goldring and I look forward to reading more of her work. Historical fiction is my favourite genre to read and this book was every bit as good as some of the well-known WW2-themed titles published in recent years.

I am grateful to the publisher, Bookouture for an advance digital copy of this book via NetGalley, in exchange for an honest review.

Disappointing ending after all that build up

Probably more of a three-and-a-half star rating. Could’ve used a bit more streamlining, but overall, more interesting than many of the WWII flashback books I’ve been assigned to narrate.

Merged review:

Probably more of a three-and-a-half star rating. Could’ve used a bit more streamlining, but overall, more interesting than many of the WWII flashback books I’ve been assigned to narrate.

Evelyn is in a nursing home, feigning much of the dementia to avoid probing questions from her niece. We learn more about Evelyn over three main time periods, WWII and it’s aftermath, the 1980’s and the current time. Evelyn has many secrets that will be revealed as her story is told. Her character is unique, and the approach by the author is quite different from other historical fiction written about Germany postwar. I was surprised by some of the twists, not expecting the from a little old lady. I recommend this book, and thank Edelweiss for the ARC.

My Rating: 4.5 Stars

She had many names. Evelyn Taylor-Clarke. Mrs. T-C to the caring home staff. Aunt Evelyn to her niece Pat, and Eva during her years of service during World War II. All of these names represent various sides to Evelyn that she manages to hide from many, during various stages of her life.

Presently, her niece Pat is helping her clear her home, as Evelyn is now in her nineties and, after breaking a hip, is unlikely to ever live there again. Pat is continually bringing different items to her aunt because she has many questions. Some the things include a photo of a little girl from 1951, a cache of weapons and odd clothing.

It is the weapons found that drastically change things for Evelyn. Pat is soon often accompanied by a detective at the Care Home. He has many questions about the things that were found, and even about a man who when missing years previously. However, as far as Pat, the staff and now the detective are concerned, Evelyn is all but senile, and her memory is unreliable.

Evelyn has a secret. Actually she has many, many secrets. For starters, her mind is as sharp as a tack, and she is simply play-acting. Furthermore, the story is told in varying timelines and readers are clued in to Evelyn's duplicitous nature and some of the activities she was engaged in during and after the war.

What a tangled web she wove! Young or old, Evelyn set out a path. During the war she had an objective. She never, ever lost sight of it and carried out her plans with exact precision. This book was equally startling and compelling. Kudos to Suzanne Goldring for writing such an impressive debut novel.

Many thanks to Bookouture and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.

I really enjoyed this. The main protagonist was full of surprises and the way she manipulates those around her.
I would have liked to have found out what happened in the end though.
