I really liked the story of this book, but felt like the jumping around from different time periods was a little off putting. Very intriguing.

This book wasn't what I expected. I thought this was a Historical Fiction maybe Historical Romance set in WWII. This story was about an ex-spy who was faking dementia in order to avoid answering for actions taken during war times.

I was surprised at how smug she was in her mental remunerations while she put on quite a show for her family as well as everyone at the senior citizen's home. I think her actions were brave in her youth, but her later crime was very calculated and coldblooded. I cannot say that I felt any sympathy for her victim, but I didn't enjoy the retelling of it.

It wasn't a historical fiction that I found any of the characters endearing or likable. It didn't tug on my emotional heart strings in the normal way that stories from this time period do. At the end, I felt relief that this story was over.

I was given a free copy of this book by @netgalley in exchange for my honest review.
It was an interesting concept with an elderly lady pretending to not remember things to keep previous secrets hidden. I really liked that although it was about WWII it was set in Europe in the aftermath of the war. We really get a different perspective of that time compared to other books. Although I wish that was expounded on, and we learned more about that tough period of trying to find homes for all these huge numbers of displaced peoples! I think it would have been pertinent to today still. I only rated it three stars because I started to not care about Eva as much at the end. I didn't really understand some of the choices she made. Overall an entertaining read, but lacked something for me to make it higher than three stars.

I tried really hard but I couldn't connect with this book.

Evelyn Taylor-Clarke, now in her 90s, lives in a care home and pretends to have dementia to cover up some past actions that are about to catch up with her. I found the whole premise that the novel is based on to be very flimsy. The story leaps back and forth through multiple timelines but we only ever get to see Evelyn's POV through a series of flashbacks and various letters to her dead husband, Hugh.

Young Evelyn seems pleasant, if rather naive, but her actions later on in life are extremely questionable. Older Evelyn, with her constant insistence on how she is outwitting everyone, eventually becomes rather tiresome. Throughout the book I could do nothing to suspend by disbelief in the plot. Unfortunately, I didn't really care for Evelyn and just felt sorry for her as it did not seem like she had a very fulfilling life: no friends and no family, except for a niece she disliked, and all because she wanted to exact revenge on the man who she felt was responsible (without any actual proof) for the loss of her husband. Undeniably, he was a nasty piece of work but I thought that her actions only put Evelyn in the same league as him.

I suppose I wanted Evelyn to be a heroine but all I got was a caricature of a person that I couldn't connect with. There are many people who have enjoyed this book and my opinion seems to be in the minority. Maybe this book was just not for me.

Sadly I did start of enjoying this book and then I got bored for some reason and I can’t really explain why though

This was a different WWII read for me it was a point of view after the was ended with the fall of Germany in the hands of the Allies. The life story of Evelyn “Eva”. The pathway she went through to seek revenge on the death of her husband Hugh at the hands of the Colonel.
She got her revenge finally years after. But, after being violated and becoming pregnant she knew she’d have to leave her child that was painful decision to make.
She never saw her once she left Germany and the child never knew her.
Evelyn joined her husband.
I enjoyed this book but skipping the years that wasn’t fun. I gave it 3 1/2 stars.
I would like to thank NetGalley, Bookouture and Suzanne Goldring for an early copy in exchange of an honest review.

Wow! This is a well written, historical mystery. The characters were great...some I grew to like and some I grew to dislike! The suspense was awesome - right to the end!! You have to read it!

This was a very interesting story. It tells Evie's story using flashbacks while she is ending her days in an assisted living facility. She lost her husband in WW2 and when she finds out he was sacrificed, she wants revenge. Eva is a cool character as she interacts with her niece and others. I love her personality and her intrigue. I definitely recommend.
