Yeah…not my favorite. I was excited to see there was a sequel but disappointed. It’s practically the same story repeated over. And she said the sequel was written for everyone who read Running Out of Time and asked what happened after, but we’re all in 20’s-30’s now. I know it’s still a YA story but it felt *too* juvenile. We also never got to see much of the bad Futureville, just small scene and then whatever Puck reiterated.

Definitely a tad heavy handed on environmentalism, but it’s a book for kids so I think it evens out.

Interesting and suspenseful, but not quite as solid as the first one.
Still good though! And fun to read 20+ years later!

For a sequel written almost thirty years after the original, I expected Haddix to have improved on the slightly lackluster execution of basically the exact same premise as the first book. Unfortunately, Haddix instead, padded the book with narrative bloat which left the book two times the length of the first with pretty much the same plot. It was also much easier to see through the premise since it's easier to fake the past than a hypothetical future. This execution disappointed exactly like all other Haddix' books have for me.

Margaret Peterson Haddix has been a cherished part of my reading journey since childhood, and her stories have remained close to my heart over the years. With "Running Out of Time" holding a special position among my favorites, I eagerly anticipated her latest offering.
Haddix's storytelling prowess shines in the intriguing premise and setup of her newest book, drawing readers in with her signature flair for captivating scenarios. The initial revelations propelled me through the first half of the book with unbridled enthusiasm. However, as the narrative progressed, I found myself increasingly plagued by unresolved questions and gaping plot holes.
In "Running Out of Time," Jessie's predicament felt palpably urgent due to the constraints closing in on her from all sides - the relentless ticking of time, her limited understanding of the world beyond, the absence of allies, and the barriers to communication between inside and outside worlds. Conversely, Zola's journey lacked the same sense of imminent danger, leaving ample room for alternative escape plans that seemed glaringly obvious and far simpler than the chosen course of action in the story.

There was more to this sequel than I expected, especially the two different futurevilles and the relationship between them. Also the ties between this book and the original one were very cool, and the vibes were very similar.
It is interesting to think about how our future might look depending on what choices we all make, but also it didn’t feel like that was the main point of the book which I liked.
