When Heba goes to the pool for the first time, she notices that her swimsuit is different than all the other kids. This sweet book explores Muslim experience in a non-Muslim place through a girl's path of learning how to swim. The beautiful illustrations and text will pull you into this book as it celebrates the differences between us.

As someone that used to be obsessed with being a mermaid as a little girl and comes from a family that also wears full-bodied bathing suits, this picture book is so appreciated! It's a splashing-good read!

On the one hand: good messaging. On the other hand I don’t like that it’s always "mermaid girl." It feels like it’s overly gendering the term and leaning into the gender binary. But also at the end Sam who presents as male is a mermaid girl too. So I just don’t know what the purpose of “mermaid girl” is vs just saying mermaid.

I do like how it un-others the little girl's burkini and the distant mermaid girls from the girl's extended family. It's really beautiful and heartwarming. But the vibes with the over-gendered text gives me pause.

This is a wonderfully sweet book about a young girl who finds the courage to embrace her differences and share her love of burkinis with others proudly. The illustrations are whimsical and bright, and I love how the story honors the generations of women who came before her.
