I liked the story but would have loved to have never read another text message between the two teens or the sex scene with a 14 year old.
I have never had to wade through so much banal teen dialogue. Badly done. Also, I awarded an extra star out of series loyalty.
I've enjoyed the whole series with Lieutenant Peter Decker - he's a real person going through a vivid and believable life. He faces police cases that don't always work out neatly, family members who have their own personalities and problems, colleagues who are interesting. I was happy to see his foster son Gabe featured in this one; I fell in love with the young piano prodigy in the last book and hoped we would see more of how his life worked out. What a great teenager. This series should be read in order, but it is not one where the books become clones of each other. The mysteries are interesting and the characters evolve. I still get the next one the moment it hits my library's best-seller rental shelves, and as soon as I'm done I look forward to the one after.
I normally enjoy Decker novels, however, the love story between Gabe and Jasmine is little more than soft porn. I was uncomfortable it. There was little in the way of police detective plot for the first eighteen chapters or so. Not impressive.
In "On Writing", Stephen King makes reference to that moment when you read a book that some publishing house paid for and think, "I can write better than this". This was another one of those moments for me. The storyline is a cute, coming of age story and it was what kept me going. The main character, Gabe Whitman is a too good to be true kid who is a world class pianist, a great student, is able to disarm two gunmen who are holding he and his girlfriend at gunpoint and speaks several languages. You get the picture, not terribly believable. The dialogue is not authentic. There are teens using words that few adults I know would typically use and they all have a fabulous grasp on grammar .... yep, teenagers. Kellerman makes frequent use of the word "dude" in an attempt to make her dialogue true to teen life. Worse yet, every time I begin to forget that I'm reading a story and feel like I am IN the story world she drops a "Look at my elegant vocabulary" bomb on me. Her favorite is "he/she regarded him". Faye, nobody says that in real life. We "look at", "check out", or even "assess" each other, but we don't "regard" one another in real life.
All of this being said, I was able to finish it and the story was mildly interesting. But if you want to read a story about a teen boy coming of age, you'd do MUCH better to pick up a copy of Stephen King's Joyland.

Sappy teen romance. Will we see Cindy again now that she's a mother?
Good plot, but really disliked the underage sexual interactions. The fact that the girl hadn't developed yet was disturbing, and I glazed over the text speech. One can only handle so many "m g8 luv u sooooooo much" so many times.
I have always enjoyed Decker/Lazarus novels but I think it has been too long since I read any. I found myself to be confused during this story because I couldn't remember who some of the characters they were talking about where- Chris and the serial killer suspect were the big two. I think I am going to have to go back to the beginning and read this series again!
