For both comedic and sentimental reasons, this is my favorite book of all time. I found it at a very untethered time in my life, and I re-read it about once a year now. This has everything - humor, wit, emotional moments, optimism, and everything I love about David Sedaris’ writing.
I read this in high school, saw him live in college and enjoyed this reread over a decade later. His writing really stands the test of time for me. Short, easy stories that will have you laughing on a rainy day.

Reading through the reviews on here and I'm convinced some of you scowl through comedy movies because the characters are "petty"...
I'm more of a novel type person but figured I would give his book a try since I have heard how good it is and it's always suggested by people. Overall, not a fan. Some parts of his book were funny but most of the time I was asking myself why I was reading it or why it was written. (This is not to say people will not find it funny. I'm not a huge fan of comedy either so I'm aware my sense of "funny" is different from the average person.) I have one other book of his to read and I will give it a go just so I can say for sure I'm not a fan of his writing.

I only finished about half of this. It’s devoid of emotion and depth, heavy on the humor. While the essays themselves were fairly enjoyable and witty, reading a compilation of somewhat pointless essays was boring. This would be better as an audio book. If I just read an essay here and there in a magazine, I’d think they were great..... in a book, not so much.

I would recommend listening to it. The audio is by the author and there are added music and sound effects which adds to the story.
