Loved this book! David Sedaris is hilarious and has such a clever voice.
I’ve sampled Sedaris here and there. I read Naked and enjoyed it. Picked this up at a little free library. His writing is great, and yeah, he’s pretty funny, especially when I read with his voice in my head. But this book hasn’t aged well…

I don't remember liking this book and regretting the buy. There was one story that I bought it for, but that was based on some redditor recounting things... or so I can remember. After all, I read it yearsss ago.

Listening to Sedaris read his books satisfies me much more thoroughly than does reading them in print. There’s something about his particular voice, his easy irony and self-flagellating humor that works very well out loud. Sedaris knows the pacing of his writing very well, as is clear from the live-in-front-of-a-studio-audience sections, in which he pauses delicately to enjoy the laughter that follows key turns of phrase.
The part of Sedaris’ writing I like best are his turns of phrase. His observations of daily life certainly amuse, but its the specific choice of words, the mix of irony and sincerity, the depth of vocabulary that stays so high on the joke meter.
I was particularly amused by the sequences in which Sedaris describes learning to speak French. I regularly laughed at his direct translations of the strange Francophonic syntax and the poor word choice necessitated by the miniscule vocabulary of the new- to- French student. He describes asking a doctor to remove a red growth from under his eye as the following “Can we say goodbye to the red friend who lives under my eye?”
I embarrassed myself on the train laughing during the sequence about his father’s habit of hiding and hoarding food. The danger of listening to comedy audio books — you look like a crazy person.
