This is not for you to see.

Ah! It was hard to put my feelings into words with this one. Firstly, I cannot say I disliked it because Chokshi writes beautiful and there are all the things I loved since the very first book: a catching plot and beautiful writing. I think I could not get myself to enjoy it better because it left me waiting. The found-family aspect was superficially touched, focusing more instead on romantic relationships. I loved each character on their own, but when it came to romance I didn't really cheer for any of them.

Also, my favourite character of past books was Hypnos, and I was just deeply saddened he did not an important part to play in this one. Sure, he is a side character, but book 2 left me thinking he would.
SpoilerMost of the time, he was there for comic relief. When he did do something important it was not recognized. And his ambiguous relationship with Enrique and Zofia... Enrique never showed interest in him being part of it, and Zofia was not romantically interested in him so I am ? about it
I think the ones I enjoyed reading the most were Séverin and Zofia, especially about Zofia and Layla, but in general, I wish we could have more of found family even if it sacrificed romantic time.

I would have loved to know more about Layla, or deepen in worldbuilding, but everything moved fast towards action and heist shenanigans, which is something I'm sure a lot of people love but isn't my thing!

At any rate, while this might not be the promising ending I was expected, it was an interesting finale that won't leave you indifferent.

maybe it's the emotions from having finished the series but 5 stars for now. i can't even say whether it's objectively perfect or not, if you can even say that about any book but i thoroughly enjoyed everything about this book. the character dynamics which have had their very extreme ups and downs. and of course the characters themselves and their developments. the plot and build-up is pretty much okay for me. the progression of the story all makes sense so there's that. and the ending is so bittersweet but i love it anyway

The characters have way too much going on. Too many quirks, and the main plot takes a sidekick role to the characters. Hypnos is grating on my soul. Ruslan is a poor man's Joker. There is somehow too much going on and nothing at all at the same time.

3 stars.

this was... fine? i'm really disappointed! i really enjoyed the silvered serpents, and even the first half of the bronzed beasts felt like we were heading for an epic conclusion. but the second part of this book just falls apart, and the ending was lackluster. overall this was a rather anticlimactic end to an otherwise solid series. i will say though, i adore chokshi's writing and will definitely be reading her other books!
