Got bored to death. I couldn't connect with the FMC.
This book deserves the hype it gets. It’s such a refreshing, darkish take on magic.
The world building and set up is immersive with an eerie atmosphere, the plot engaging and well paced even if it leaves you questioning certain things.
The characters unique and original in their own way, fascinating even if dark. I can’t wait to get into the second one and see how this story concludes.
It’s definitely different from what I have read lately, but in the best way possible. Just so so intriguing! And this being a debut?? Hello?? Okay miss girl, slay!

as with many other reviews, i found the repetition of certain phrases annoying at times. surely, there are other ways to describe a voice dripping with oil ..
however, the story was engaging and the characters interesting, though Elspeth was a little too damsel-esque in some parts.
the romance was well built up and i like how the compliment each other.
excited to read the second one and see where the story goes from here!

If you take anything away from this review... just know you need to read this book now!
Rachel Gillig writes in the most poetic way I have ever seen. It was so beautifully written that I wanted to devour each sentence. One Dark Window is by far the best book I have read all year and will definitely be one of my all time favorites. The world building and the magic system is one of the most unique I have read. This story immediately captured my attention and it took everything in me to put it down, which only happened because I'm forced to work. This is the epitome of a gothic dark fantasy with a touch of spice and I enjoyed it so much more than I truly thought I would. I understand why this book has so much hype on Booktok and it deserves ever moment of said hype.
My absolute favorite character is The Nightmare which lives inside Elspeth's head (our FMC). He is snarky, sarcastic and a little creepy in all the best ways. He kept me on my toes and I loved his banter with Elspeth. And then we have Ravyn Yew and Elm Rowan... immediately yes to both of them. I love Elm's loyalty and his skepticism of Elspeth. He is much more a Yew than a Rowan and I appreciated the pessimistic attitude which kept things feeling real. Nobody would accept a random girl into their little rebellion group easily and Elm truly kept things real here. And then we have Rayvn. He is the true depiction of "he falls first". Even is he denied it and tried to "pretend", he was falling for Elspeth immediately. I enjoyed him denying his feelings and being the standoff-ish mysterious bad boy. I cannot wait to see how he continues to develop in book two.
The ending of this book had me immediately picking up book two. My only complaint about this duology is that it is only two books. I could have truly devoured a 6 book series of this story.
