It took me nearly a month to read it. I'm sad, I thought I would enjoy it so much that I would fly through it but no, it was just OK and I don't really understand the overwhelming praise this book has on Goodreads or Booktube.

I thought the magic system with the cards was interesting and so different from other recent romantasy books I've read. I loved the Nightmare and his silly little poems, and I loved the concept of having a monster constantly in your mind and having to hide it. I also loved how the infection gives you special powers. But that's about it :(

The romance came out of nowhere for me, I still have no idea why they love (or like idk) each other?? I thought it'd have more depth than "we're hot and have to be near each other".

The revelation about who the Nightmare is is only a revelation to Elspeth. The reader can guess it from 1000 miles away so honestly that was underwhelming.

The plot of having to retrieve cards could have been good if it wasn't so easy? Why is that girl just telling us where a card is? Why is that man just giving Elspeth the card lol.

The ending made the book interesting again, but I don't know if that will be enough to get me to read the second book.

Nothing of consequence happened until the last 10-15% of the book. Yes there was world building but it felt repetitive and unimportant as I was listening. The ending was eventful.

Tarot card magic was definitely a new aspect to romantasy that I hadn't considered. However, with my experience with Rachel Gilig in the past few months, it seems this is a pattern. Knight and the Moth had divination - this has Tarot.

The relationship between Ravyn and Elspeth was nice and was fairly fleshed out, even with her keeping secrets of being infected and having bestie-monster in her mind.

Maybe it's my twisted mind, but I actually found the monster to be funny at times. I feel like he popped up to be a dick and I won't lie, I laughed here and there. He's no Bartholomew/Gargoyle, however.

Will I read book two? Yeah. Probably in 2-3 business weeks though 🤣

A Grimm-esque novel for the dark romance book people. The main character was a bit one note and the romance felt a bit forced, but the plot and the magic of the world are enough to keep going. I’ll be reading the next book in the series.
