Finallllly a book that manages to make me believe a cursed magical girl can really fall for a cursed magical girl hunter! Like… THANK YOU GILLIG! An enemies to lovers with a backdrop of crumbling kingdom & tarot cards with an innovative twist. I mayyy have thought Elspeth was gonna fall in love with the nightmare at the beginning but that’s just me and my thoughts n dreams for you.

I really liked how Gillig untwisted her tale, giving us just enough and then just enough more to make it to the next plot twist or secret from the past. Unravelling the craft behind the story was almost as much fun as the plot because it was so richly woven. Don’t even get me started on the worldbuilding! The tree lineages???!! The ghosts!! Chef’s kiss!

Funnily enough, I never guess twists and I actually guessed all of these pretty early on. I think I just got lucky, or maybe Gillig was writing to a reader like me (a Grimm’s Brothers freak). Imo a lot of books from the last couple years tried to crib from Gillig’s dark fairytale notes and… failed.

I absolutely loved this book and can’t wait to read the second one. I have a lot of theories and can’t wait to see if I’m right or not.
