Shadows of Self is an improvement on Alloy of Law in some great ways. It takes the characters (except Wayne, who I won't even pretend I care for) and really grows them. It's a book steeped in and reverent of the history of the first trilogy, perhaps too explicitly, but in enjoyable ways. Alloy of Law is a fun Western-style romp, whereas Shadows is a much darker story that's got a wider scope. I like what it does, and I remember on reread really enjoying the duo of Shadows and Bands more than the rest of Era 2. It's still a 4-star book, but maybe closer to 4.5.

Great book. I absolutely LOVED the ending. I did not see it coming and it left me gob smacked and feeling sad for Wax. My only negative is that it felt around 50 pages too long and I didn't care too much for Marasi plot and all the inner constable workings.

I still can't believe Sazet is a God and an awful one for that. I thought at first I wouldn't like Melaan but her and Wayne's banter was the best part. Anyways, best boy is Wayne like always. I absolutely LOVED his character development in this one.

I thought it was good! It drags in some areas but overall I liked it!
