What a fun read! I enjoyed the tricky politics and alluring mystery behind the Rook. I especially loved the inclusion of Tarot and Astrology, it felt like a mystical riddle I had to solve alongside Ren. I can’t say much for fear of spoilers, but I very much enjoyed my reading. I will say, it can get complicated at times, but the charming characters more than make up for it!

I’m excited to get my hands on book two!

Dnf @ 10%

The world building is so dENSE and heavy early on that I was quickly losing interest. I also didn’t check the tags before starting so my bad on that too. Not for me 🫡

DNF: I just could not get into this book. The reveal of the Rook before part two perked my interest again, but everything was far too slow for my liking. And library books gotta be returned!

Age at time of reading: 37

I'm going to be generous with the 4 stars I'm giving this one, only because the final 1/3 really held me in. I was so close to DNF, which is something I never do (hard FOMO of what if the book gets good, and so many people loved it). It was a painfully slow start and took forever to get any exciting plot points moving. I called some of the twists (including the major who's who) VERY early on. I am still going to give it the higher rating for the unique magic/world, found family, street rats and con jobs.

This book is a five course meal during Christmas. Heavy dishes with so much in it and hard to digest. If you're into a complex fantasy story with HARDCORE worldbuilding, this is your jam.

Could not get into it. Since it is a series i decided to stop trying to force it and waste more time.
