While I mostly enjoyed the first book of the series, the second volume of Eagles of Rome unfortunately falls into many of the clichés often associated with the graphic novel genre. The excessive violence and sexual content felt unnecessary, and the storyline quickly began to seem generic and uninteresting to me. For this reason, (even though Marini is undoubtedly a talented illustrator) my journey with the series ended here.

This series is so twisted but realistic - it is truly how I imagined Rome in times of Augustus to be like. The political and military as well as the romance: it's ancient Rome through and through. The drawings are lovely - especially the close-up portraits and the use of colour to reflect the atmosphere in the scene. Not regretting rereading this at all.
