Enjoyed the book. My first one from the author so was not sure what direction it was going. Enjoyed it enough to check out a couple more from the library.

The uber clever FBI agent who seems to be able to deduce anything, inexplicably drags his inept, bumbling South Hampton cop around attempting to solve a mystery. What is the point of D'Agosta? He isn't even one of those entertaining bumblers that gets the pair into more trouble. He seems to merely be a way for Pendergast to show off his limitless brilliance, eccentricities and lock picking talents.

Pendergast is way too over the top, no flaws, always saves the day. The plot twists were few and mostly met with the reaction "What? Who cares about that?"

The Hayward thread seemed to be filler rather than a humanizing aspect for D'Agosta.

It gets 2 stars because there were parts in the middle I enjoyed and briefly cared about the characters.

Agent Pendergast is as good as ever in this first of a triolgy. I can't wait to read the next two.
