The first book of the series. Vampires have banished the fae and that should be a good thing. But some vampires are now worse than the fae for humans. But there are also those who wish they to stop the deaths of innocents. Soren is a lord over Salem and not one he wants. He at times can be the hero or the villain. For Gemma he may be both. As an orphan she has a dark past but soon finds that she doesn’t even know what she is. The story has tons of action and danger. The relationship between the two main characters builds throughout the story. It ends in a happy for now as this is only the first of the series.
As with most new series it took a little bit to get the setup of this storyline, but once it came together I could not put this book down. Gemma is such an underdog yet her heart is so big. Gemma and Soren’s tale is somewhat of an enemies to lovers trope, but also a little fated mate. In this new “world” old paranormal stereotypes are familiar, vampires behave as we expect. Fae are on the crazy side. Witches get used. And humans are at the bottom of the totem pole. Then Gemma comes along as something new, maybe dangerous, definitely tempting. Great read, can’t wait to read the next book!
