The story follows two twins, one expected and desired, the other a spare. They're born to an incredibly powerful figurehead and "gifted" to the Grand Monastery to be raised. This was a super interesting world where your gender isn't official until you go through a confirmation ceremony. The twins are returned to their mother, who holds a very high rank in society and exercises her power without care for the civilians. This is the first in a 4 part series. This first story focuses on the Twin's upbringing and how they find themselves settling into adulthood and learning about the world outside their sheltered walls. Are the Machinists or the Tensors in the right? Is the protectorate actually protecting anyone? I'm very intrigued by this world and the setup and look forward to continuing this series!

More time skips than I expected. Underwhelming ending. Engaging during some parts though, so it felt like it had potential. [spoilered parts are complaints about specific scenes]
Why did he keep kissing his sister's boyfriend and later husband tho??? Those parts were so random. Apart from that, the part where apparently to choose not to kill his mother would truly free him could have more setup because it was just confusing.

This story follows twin children named Mokoya and Akeha who live in the Grand Monastery and grew up in an environment that left both of them isolated and mainly dependent on one another. They are able to communicate through a system called slackcraft where they hear each other's thoughts and at times feel each other's pain. As kids, neither of them are gendered and are referred to by they/them pronouns until the kids themselves decide on a gender and have a confirmation ceremony. A point of contention arrises between the siblings when Akeha decides to be confirmed as a girl and it drives a rift between her and her twin. In the Tensorate universe, prophecies are not taken lightly so when Akeha develops the skill for seeing prophecies, the pair attempt to band together and change the outcome, to no avail. When a third comes into their lives, Thennjay, it makes an even bigger rift between them and Mokoya gets confirmed as a boy, the first son of the Protectorate (a monarch figure and their mother) in many years.  The next half of the book follows Mokoya who flees from the monastic lifestyle and from his sister to find a path for himself and oppose a mother that is opressing a kingdom and the twins. I really enjoyed the twin dynamic in this book and the fluidity of gender and how it worked in this silkpunk universe. I can't wait to start on the rest of the series. Neon Yang has definitely become one of my favorite authors in fantasy.

I could’ve spent 100 more years with this book. I think on a re-read I’ll give it 5 stars. I wish I had been able to read it in one sitting, the pacing is quick and the writing style is beautiful. It’s a book to be savored or devoured - as long as it is with love and with intention.
I’m excited to read more of Neon Yang’s work!
