The best moments of this volume are when Batman tries to cope with the loss of Jason Todd or when he tries to hide his vulnerability from Robin not to worry him (even though it was a bit foolish from him). It was also a generally interesting showcase of some of Batman's less recognizable villains as well as the classic ones.

If Joker is like hundred cats in a hat each neurotic with its own agenda, Bane is anti-thesis of that. His strategy involves patience, careful planning and total annihilation. His plan is to bring down the city where Batman just happened to live.

It starts off slowly without giving away much of needed twists or even plot by introducing various characters or villains while Batman valiantly fights them off. Its almost like a mob-boss is ordering hit on the city itself while Batman is the lone gun man defending it.

By the time Batman faces Bane, he is tired and worn and wonders if he can make it through. Its very non-Batman-ish as its something not written often but that moment it all seems very humane. Batman doesn't show fear nor does he give up in the wake of evil. With Bane he does both and the moments leading to breaking his back, he stops fighting back as the fight leaves him completely.

Choosing Bane to defeat Batman came as a surprise as Joker seemed to be an apt candidate for doing so. Joker would probably blow something up and that would be end of it. But with Bane its about taking away the strength that's essential for Batman to go out on the street and fight. With Bane it's not about killing off Batman. Its about making Batman a silent accomplice when the city falls into shambles.
And that makes Bane more deadly than joker.

Bane is a terrible character. Super smart, super strong, no real depth except an oh-so-tragic past. He was never a suitable nemesis for the Bat. As such, Knightfall is not a great story.
