I was ready to give 5☆ but the ending was rather disappointing. I think I'm going to pick up the sequel just to get a proper resolution because I loved the characters but the story ended so fast after the showdown.

I do know this is the first book in a trilogy but it just feels unfinished, even after 500 pages of character development Monty is still a proper piece of work even by the end. That's fine I don't need my characters all to be perfect and I do find him charming but honestly, I just wanted him to talk to Percy properly (and maybe to apologise to him and Felicity one more time).

The miscommunication is painful but overall I couldn't put the book down and the historical accuracy is impressive from the events, food, and language it's all adapted well for a modern audience my only complaint is the clothes are accurate but there are not enough hats and gloves.

I'm rather disappointed Monty doesn't even think about telling his mother the information about her marriage, are we supposed to believe she already knows the truth or are we not to care because she's one of the bad guys? It was late when I finished the book but I'm certain he never brings her up.

So many things about this book held so much promise, but up until the last 20%, I was simply bored. Had I not been listening to this on audio, I don’t think I would have finished it. I didn’t find myself carrying about the characters much at all, though I did like Percy okay. However, the main characters (and narrator) was so deeply unbearable as a person that I zoned out regularly

The writing is absolutely PHENOMENAL and so freaky funny. It's also heart reaching, but you can always kinda see it coming. It's technically a long book but something you could get through in a couple of days.

<Spoiler>It also talks about a lot of interesting topics that were seen as taboo (although some of them aren't brought to a whole lot of detail considering the whole book is told from the perspective of a traumatized white teen boy who's an Earls son... But he slowly starts to learn, grow, and mature as he keeps ALMOST DYING.
