I did not expect to completely, utterly love and adore this book the way I did. It's easily a new all-time favourite and I am entirely obsessed. It was the kind of book that I kept trying to slow myself down from reading as I didn't want it to be over, but at the same time I physically couldn't stop myself fully devouring it. I was hooked from the very beginning and I loved Monty and Percy's characters so, so much and I just could not wait to see how things turned out for them. I don't usually gravitate towards adventure-type stories and so this sat on my shelf for literally years before I finally read it and whilst I wish I had done so sooner because I ended up loving it so much, I'm at least glad that I was able to experience the thrill and unadulterated joy of reading it for the first time now! It's definitely one I can see myself going back to and loving even MORE each time around. The characters, the plot, the relationships, the 1700s setting, the balance of humour and discussion of serious topics, the character development (particularly Monty's).........all 100/10.

i don’t know how to start this review tbh. there’s a lot to say and none of it is very good. i only gave it two stars because the writing itself is good, but she as a white woman had no business writing this kind of story with the amount of racial slurs used and the general theme, and i spent the entire time while reading it beside myself with mixed feelings.

it’s disgusting to ship percy with monty and it’s gross that they still get together at the end given how monty treats him throughout the novel but especially in the beginning—because this is the monty percy would have been exposed to since they were boys. a monty who will say racist things to him when he gets upset, percy who is supposedly his best friend, and even despite that percy is so patient with him and has to *teach* him about racism even when monty barely makes an effort to understand or accept that he has a white savior complex.

monty went through a huge character growth arc, but percy didn’t have the same kind of growth, and monty went through that growth at the expense of percy’s dignity, being written with an illness, who was used as a prop for him. not to mention scipio’s crew, who were also used as props to help monty grow.

i have no idea how or why this book is so highly rated given the contents of it and how the author chooses to write her characters. and after reading the reviews and finding out she’s transphobic as well, i’m unsurprised to find that my gut feeling about this book reading the way it does is correct.

Significantly heavier in topic than the summary blurb suggests, with a bit more magic involved than expected. A good read with good characters.

*slaps cover of book* Finally! A historically accurate depiction of pirates and privateers that also isn't boring! This makes me so happy as someone with not only a moderate interest in pirate history but also someone who wants to write their own pirate-themed novel one day. (If you're curious, I already have quite a bit planned and written out, but that isn't relevant to this review haha).

In all seriousness, though, I was very glad to see such dedication within a book to make things historically accurate, including language, but also be such a fun book to read with both interesting characters and plotlines. I especially enjoyed the characters as they were all so carefully constructed and developed. I enjoyed the balance of the main character Monty's own issues, with his privilege as a white male aristocrat. It never felt overly self-flagellating in any direction, and he genuinely grew as a character as their journey went on.

I also really liked the balance of humor and seriousness. There were plenty of serious situations our group of characters found themselves in, however, there was also a lightheartedness that gave their adventure a sense of wonder. It felt true to how life can really be sometimes. I think my favorite bit of humor was when Monty accidentally flashed a great deal of upper society. I laughed so hard, I almost cried.

I have high hopes for the sequel, The Lady's Guide to Petticoats and Piracy, and hope Mackenzi Lee continues what great work she's done in The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue
