Zombies are not a new concept by any means- the horrors of the undead have been thoroughly explored over the past decade or so through tv, movies, books, video games, role playing games and podcasts. But I think the reason why I love this book so much more than the rest of the zombie media I’ve consumed is that this book isn’t telling the story of how zombies took over; this book is telling the stories of the people who lived and survived through the worldwide zombie crisis.

Written as a series of interviews of different people all across the world, World War Z explores the crisis through the eyes of people of different nationalities, work backgrounds, religions, economic status and ways of life. Beyond that, the stories told in these interviews span from Patient Zero, through the height of the war, and into the cleanup and recovery period across a span of about 10 years. Topics of course cover the horrors of going against the undead- facing an enemy who does not sleep, does not feel pain or fear, never stopping until the brain is destroyed- but it also covers facets of the crisis I had never thought about. Is it safer to hunker down in your home, or to flee? How does weather factor into how the crisis is handled? What happens when fuel runs out? When winter is coming and food is running low? How does military training and equipment work against enemies that can take the full force of a grenade and keep on coming? How do you decide who to save and who to leave for dead?

The book is haunting, creating images that will be hard to forget. The audiobook was excellent, using a full cast to create individual voices for each person being interviewed.

A lot of military jargon. Interesting at first but started to drag in the middle/end.

This book is great but can be boring at parts if you are not super into machinery and know military jargon, either way it’s a good read and makes some excellent points. Much better  than it’s movie adaptation!

This was not a blood and gore zombie book, which is what I expected. I read "Devolution" first, and I enjoyed how Max Brooks did **not** over-gore things. I am not a fan of zombie books AT ALL, so I always skipped this book. However, after "Devolution", I decided to give it a read. It was fantastic! Very different from what I expected and what I normally read.
