A thorough and powerful collection.
Giovanni's poetry speaks with a voice of strength and clarity.
In her own words, "I like to think that if truth has any bearing on art, my poetry and prose is art because it's truthful". Indeed these poems are brimming with truth.

Andrew bought this lovely book for me for Christmas one year. Such an overwhelming block of Nikki all at once! I really must read this again, but slower. Maybe one collection at a time so that they might be more distinct in my mind.

Language use! So many places of connection, so many layers of meaning. Will definitely reread.

In high school, we studied several of her poems during black history month. I'm disappointed in myself that its taken this long to continue reading her power words. What a visionary.

This collection gave me hot cocoa, literally cupped me and forced my foggy eyes see more clearly, if only for a minute. A work that makes you say thank you.

This poetry is angry. This poetry is real, raw. I know I'm just a white girl looking at the art of a brilliant black woman and I'm lucky to have read this. It is powerful and emotional, gripping and life-altering. In a world where people claim racism and sexism is gone, decades later and that is still not true. I want to own this collection and buy it for all my friends.
