For such a short book is such a powerful read. This book tells the details of Murray one of eight first prisoners sent to auschwitz and the only one to survive. His story is both painful and heroic. The will to survive such ghastly things. I can't begin to put into words the emotion this story has. It's a must read. I am happy that Murray is now at peace and gets the rest he deserves. Amazing biography.

Although the thrust of the story is somewhat lessened by the second-hand and therefore indirect point of view of the narrator; in relating the story of her uncle, the totalitarian inhuman ugliness of the Nazi regime stares you straight in the face. Should you have any doubt about the nature of pure evil, contemplate this quote from the introduction;

“Eichmann, a major figure in the Holocaust, testified at his trial for crimes against humanity in Israel by stating, “To be frank with you, had we killed all of them, the ten-point-three million, I would be happy to say, all right, we managed to destroy an enemy. I shall leap into my grave laughing, because the feeling that I have the deaths of five million people on my conscience will be for me a source of extraordinary satisfaction.”

This was another good telling of Holocaust era history. It is unfathomable to believe things like this have happened in not so distant past. I think this story lacked a little depth and realism I’ve read in other Holocaust stories. It could have benefited from more detail in places and a little less in others. The telling of the horrors of the concentration camps felt pretty run of the mill and I didn’t really “feel” the terror I’m sure he felt nearly every minute of every day.
