Brutal. I hadn’t known about “comfort women” before reading this. I am glad to bear witness to Lee’s story and am grateful to Gendry-Kim for covering such difficult material.
The graphic novel format for this book worked really well - the author told the history in stark, clear phrases, and the illustrations in their simple, black-and-white brushstrokes held a lot of room for the layered depths of the stories inside.

La història de la Lee Ok-sun és duríssima —ella mateixa afirma que mai a la seva vida s'havia sentit completament feliç—, però no hi he acabat d'entrar, tot i que he patit de valent per la protagonista en algun tram. Agraeixo que l'autora, Keum Suk Gendry-Kim hagi defugit del sensacionalisme amb un tema tan delicat com el que es tracta a la novel·la gràfica, el de l'explotació sexual, però la seva narrativa visual no m'ha permès capbussar-me a dins de la història completament. M'han colpit els seus paisatges i el blanc i negre dur i aspre del seu dibuix, però sovint aquests mateixos paisatges no els he sabut interpretar, i els personatges també m'han generat un bon grapat de moments ambivalents. Suposo que, estèticament i narrativa, aquesta obra no fa per mi, tot i que reconec el valor del que explica i coincideixo que les vides i les lluites que hi apareixen cal visibilitzar-les perquè no caiguin en l'oblit.

I'm a huge fan of memories told through graphic novels. I think it's a perfect medium for that, especially when it has a political/historical event around it (like the famous Maus and Persepolis). I don't know why, it just works so well.
What I liked about Grass the most is how it stays away from graphic depictions of the violence, how it doesn't sensationalises the horrifying life of "comfort women". And what I loved even more about Ok-Seon Lee's story is that in spite of all the horrors and pains she continues to fight.
It's not an easy read by any means. And naturally I cried by the end of it (and I was on the plane).
The landscape panels, the grass and flowers panels were amazing. I think the choice of ink for the art was great and I'm now curious to see the author's other works.

Es una novela grafica así que se lee super rapido, el estilo de dibujo es bien bonito pero tambien muy expresivo, me transmitió muy bien el dolor, la soledad y la tristeza que vive la protagonista. La historia es fuerte igual, habla sobre una niña que ademas de tener una infancia dificil por la pobreza, la secuestraron para tenerla como una esclava sexual para soldados japoneses.
Te hace reflexionar mucho sobre lo cruel que es el hombre, sobre todo en las guerras, como las mujeres seguimos siendo vistas como un objeto de placer hasta el día de hoy, me da rabia y me duele. Esta muy bien lograda la novela.
