I rounded up. I’d give it 3.5 stars if I could. The book seemed to be a little underwhelming in the beginning but eventually it picked up. I found it to be very relatable having experienced a few of the things that Tabby and her friends went thru. Overall, an enjoyable read.

I had high hopes for this one, but I didn’t enjoy it as much as I thought I was going to. It had a lot of potential to be an intriguing story about all the complexities of life as a Black woman. For example, the major friend group seemed interesting and reminded me of Insecure in the way they were written. There was a lot going on in this book, but I felt like major events and plot points were glossed over and not given full attention for their contribution to the plot and Tabby’s development. Not an awful book, just not what I was hoping for.

Black Girls Must Die Exhausted sets out to tackle of lot of issues. At its core it’s a reflection on race relationships and how Black People, but also Black Woman move through the world. You get Tabitha’s point of view and inner monologue the entire book which is a unique and important point-of-view to consider. Especially since it’s different from my own but also similar in some ways as a female. There’s a lot left to consider and chew on as you read this novel.
But some of the topics are a little heavy-handed. I felt like I was being lectured at and being told how to react rather then letting me have my own thought-process. Also we got a lot of topics within one book: there’s racial injustice with the police, but also within the workplace, infertility, death, friendships, and cheating to name a view. While I got used to the writing being preachy almost, the drama really kept the book moving forward. You don’t get a chance to sit with your emotions, the book plows on. Which works in its favor I guess, because I couldn’t put the book down. I really wanted to know what happened with Tabitha and all her personal relationships and decisions.
There are some books that I think would work really well as book club books, and this is one of them. I finished the book and had big feelings and I wanted to see if other people felt similar. There’s a lot of topics and issues to discuss, the writing is pretty good and it has a storyline that drives the plot which makes this a book I’d recommend.
