Loved this book, would strongly recommend reading Healing the Shame That Binds You by John Bradshaw before you read this - bell hooks cites him often and for good reason. Both are amazing reads.

A great read, especially amidst a therapy. One I’d recommend for Black folks looking to link/understand generational trauma and how it impact self-esteem and the soul. Note wholly intersectional, but for its time (came out in 2003) it shines a good like on antiracist efforts. For any DEI practitioner, give it a read. It’s bell hooks after all.

This should be required reading. bell hooks is by far one of my favorite authors but not many folks talk about this particular work. This book in short will put you on a clear path towards awareness and healing. Rather than spoil the entire book, I say purchase at least 2 copies. 1 to take notes, 2 to keep a clean copy and perhaps 1 more to gift to someone. Yes it is that good.

Had to read for a class in undergrad. Also did a presentation on it.

I love bell hooks....but I forgot that I'm not a big fan of the way she writes at times....it can be a tad bit repetitive and halfway through I felt like we weren't covering any new ground. But this book was exactly what I needed this summer.
