A fun, cute graphic novel that balances romance with a mystery and struggles with homophobia. Set on a ranch, the way it handled the setting resonated with me (rural gay). The use of miscommunication was a little more bearable than most books that use it since it was for the mystery aspect and made sense for the characters. The art is also pretty cute.

What an interesting combination of horror and queer romance. The characters were so realistic! And Terciero is very skilled at slow revelations. Although I would’ve liked the ending to be more drawn out and filled with queer love, I was satisfied.

Being a Latinx gay teen in Texas isn't easy, and to make things worse, Cade's step-dad gets him a job on a ranch for the summer. Toss in a fascination with horror movies, and he becomes convinced something dark and mysterious is going on with the family that owns the ranch. Great characters,  first love, and some twists keep you engaged from the first page to the last. *note: the animal death noted in the content warning is a mouse and it is not tortured, or anyone's pet.

I’ve never read Northanger Abbey (though the Author’s note at the end now makes me want to check that out too - I loved this retelling and how the author connected the main character’s queer identity to his love of horror movies and his questioning of mysteries happening all around him. This is a sweet read with a sweet romance as well as meaningful family and friend relationships.
