As a queer kid that also grew up in bible thumping small texas towns, this book hit hard and close to home. I love getting to see and read stories that would've helped me dearly as a kid.

A graphic novel illustrated in brown tones about a gay boy from Texas falling in love with a ranger while on his first Summer job. At first glance that is what it is all about. But the book covers more ground than just love. It's also a story about life, death, grief, homophobia, growing up and acceptance.

Written by Rey Terciero and illustrated by Bre Indigo, Northranger is an exciting tale. The story even takes the form of somewhat of a murder mystery with horror themes. Even though it is aimed at a younger group of people, the themes are quite mature. The book even comes with a warning up front as not everyone might take a theme like death lightly. But death is a part of life on the range. And in life in general too.

Main characters Cade Muñoz and the enigmatic Henry are two cuties that you can't help but root for. And in the end love and family matter the most. A lovely graphic novel that I would read all over again in a heartbeat.  Did you know this was inspired by Jane Austen's Northanger Abbey?
