The Slug

Another humorous but educational take on one of the less desirable creatures that we live with everyday.

Through cute and funny pictures kids will learn about the common land slug. Great vocabulary words are used such as mollusk, tentacles and predator in a way that kids can figure out what they mean. The group of 5-8 year olds that I read this to loved the silly things that the slug said as well as learning about how slugs move around, find a mate and the fact that they are both boys and girls at the same time.

I enjoyed all of the great curriculum tie-ins for learning about the natural world and biology. I also liked that the slugs importance to humans and the environment was included.

This book was received for free in return for an honest review.

Very cute! I enjoyed the simple and funny illustrations, and actually learned a bit about slugs that I didn't previously know. I great kids book.

I liked the drawing style and the fun facts- I can see this going over well with kids who like nonfiction.

I received a free copy of this book through Goodreads Firstreads Giveaways. This is a children’s book that is part of a series called Disgusting Critters that looks at critters children tend to look at as gross or, as the title says, disgusting and paints them in a positive light to show why they are necessary and what they do that’s positive for the environment we live in. This book in the series is about the slug and puts a nice twist on how we usually view these critters through a nice story and pretty illustrations.

There really isn’t too much to say about this book, since it was a simple children’s book and doesn’t have too much to analyze. So first, the writing. Honestly, I probably would have only rated this three starts if it wasn’t for the beautiful illustrations and how nicely it was all put together with an artistic viewpoint, but that bumped it up to four stars. The writing wasn’t awful and the story was decent, but it was a little lacking. I felt like even a few more pages would have made this book completely worthy of the four-star rating that I decided to give it. But, overall, it’s a nice story that children can enjoy while learning something about slugs.

The illustrations are very handsome and superbly placed in this book. That was the first thing I noticed about this book when I took it out of the packaging. The first thing I said was wow this is a really pretty book. The cover is pretty, the illustrations are pretty, the inside covers are pretty, and the way the writing is written is pretty. This is a colorful book, another reason that children are sure to love this, and the colors help to warm the slug’s appearance even more. This book is probably worth the read even if just for the pictures.

That’s about all I have to say about this short little book. I’m sure kids would find this book amusing and fun and would definitely learn something if they were to pick up this book. I have not read the other books in this series (The Rat, Head Lice, The Fly, and The Spider) but, if given the chance or if I came across them, I wouldn’t hesitate to check them out and give them a read. Overall, this book is worth it to check out and would be a nice, education, beautifully illustrated read for a child.

Another "disgusting creatures" book. Great illustrations, well designed, fun and factual.

Looking for funny engaging books to encourage my reluctant reader to read and this fit the bill. Kiddo laughed the whole way through.

Disclaimer: I received a free digital copy of this book from NetGalley.

I previously reviewed [b:Le Rat|20438693|Le Rat|Elise Gravel|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1388878582s/20438693.jpg|30827730] by the same author and had some complaints that it personified rats as rude or mean. It sounds silly, I know, but I had concerns that since the book is mostly educational, making rats seem bad or evil might confuse or scare children.

Thankfully, I enjoyed this book much more! It was more educational and the jokes stayed mostly in the pictures and didn't have to do with slugs being jerks. It even suggested kids be nice to slugs by "sharing a salad" with them, which I thought was really cute!

As mentioned in The Rat, the illustrations and text are very artistic and eye-catching, the illustrations are cute and funny, and it's educational, which is a win in my book.

I like that it was non-fiction but the narration added some fun making it read more like a storybook. Elise Gravel makes charming cartoons.

So funny. I want all of these books. The gross out factor will leave kids in stitches and hopefully they'll want to learn more about icky creatures. <3 this entire series of books.
