This was amazing! I actually liked book 2 even more than book 1. I thought the cult story was absolutely fun and I was hooked to it.

Michael Tolliver is so much fun! his trip on the pacific princess with Mary Ann was fabulous. They each were hoping to find someone they can have fun with. At the beginning of the trip, they pretended to be married and were sitting with this traditional couple. It does sound like cliche right? but just remember that this was written in 1978 and in 2022, I can still recognize most of the themes here in today's tv shows and movies! I'm amazed at the influence Armistead had on media in general. I mean Michael Tolliver is the gay best friend in every Hollywood movie and tv show.

Anyways, Mary Ann finds Burke and likes him a lot but strangely he doesn't remember living in San Francisco at all! he suffered amnesia! and so Mary Ann convinces to go back to SF with her to dig through what happened and to solve the mystery. A big chunk of this book was dedicated to solving this highly entertaining mystery.

Mona moves to Nevada to a whore house and we all get shocked when she finds out that the lady is just her grandma and that Mrs. Madrigal is just her father! ... this was an interesting story as well.

And then there was Dede meeting Dorothea and becoming best friends with her. Dorothea convinces her to move abroad and leave all the gossip behind. Her mom Frannie, joins some moms over 60 cult in Marin.

This was full on silly soap antics. Amnesia, murder, and other stuff that seems so absurd you just throw your hands up and enjoy the ride. Cynthia Nixon’s audio version was a bit dry for my liking.

these books have the same appeal as mary hartman, which is to say they're a parody of popular culture we can't access anymore. I enjoyed the really fast clearly-serialized pace even if it meant the characters are flimsy, since they're just vehicles for silliness and sweetness. Already, though, the development of characters like deedee suggests that they might get deeper. Wish d'orothea wasn't the closest thing to a character of color in the series so far
