In many ways a book I’m terrified of ending up writing! Wakefield acts like he discovered soap operas and treats them like a weird culture he has examined and is here to report back on. Only toward the end does he begin to address the work of fans and previous culture writers on the subject. His writing is pretty sexist and he calls a lot of TV characters “bitchy.” HOWEVER it’s an excellent snapshot of the process of making All My Children in the early-mid-70s from soup to nuts, and is worth checking out for that reason.
