This dragging on… Why did I like the first.

RATING: 3.5 Stars

Just something about this series that bothers me, is the amount of internal monologue. I'm all for listening in on someone's thought to get to understand the character but it happens ALL THE TIME. It happens after every said sentence that everything mentions is a least a paragraph long and sometime I forget what someone's said because there is just so much in between words. It feels like the story drools on because of this.

Sometimes I just wish there was a whole page full of dialogue just to break things up!

And because of the internal monologue between the actual dialogue, most of the time it is just repetitive. Whether it's the same sentences said over and over again, or the same thing just said a bunch of different ways. Some of the internal monologue sounds pretty and adds to the feeling and story that's playing out but, goodness, it is just too much.

Chaos

This book had so much going on in it. The guys and Bernie never got a break from the madness. Bernie did however find time to dive deeper into her relationships with the guys. It was interesting to see how different it unfolded with each of them.

What a rollercoaster. I am still processing right now. CM absolutely outdid herself on this book. Not only was that an amazing book, but this series is by far one of my favorites. Everything about this book was perfection. She wrote it so well you could get be in characters heads knowing how they thought and felt. She has such a talent for detail and really making her characters come to life it is unbelievable.

Bernie and her boys pick off right where they left off. Halloween night. You see such an evolution for Bernadette. She goes from a scared timid girl, to a complete steel back bone gal. She learns to take nothing from no one, not even her boys. Each of the boys grow too. You learn so much more about each one, diving into their history and why they are the way they are. It was such a remarkable book. There was so much angst, wonder, mystery, humor, and sadness all in one book. I can not wait for Mayhem. This series is truly amazing and dare I say her best. I highly recommend getting lost in Bernadette’s world with her boys and I bet you’ll be calling havoc once you start and get engulfed in the story!

The spice of this book is just next level. Like the writing of it is incredible and described in the best way. I hate the use of slang in books though, makes it super cringey. I think if I had read this series back when I first started reading I would thought it’s the best ever but I’ve read enough amazing reverse harems to know better.

I had a lot of issues with this book. Now I love a good bully romance when the characters realistically make amends. Unfortunately there was none of that here. Book 1 didn't have the male characters bring any remorse to their actions either, but I looked past that since it was only the first in the series. I couldn't do that as much with book 2.

Book 1 made it clear that Vic and Aaron were in love with her, but her history with the others was incredibly unclear. In fact, book 1 made it seem like they only occasionally interacted in their youth.

Suddenly in this book, the boys have been in love with her for years. And supposedly so was she? I had trouble buying it. I could never understand the why. Ok, she wanted to be a part of their little gang, but why did that equal love? And for each of them, what did they love about her then? What did they love about her now? What did she love about them besides the fact that her libido has her dropping her panties every 5 sec? Everything on the topic was incredibly superficial. I couldn't feel the chemistry between the characters. Vic and Bernie were constantly angry at each other, but she loves him? The story just went back and forth between I hate them, I love them, I trust them, I don't trust them. Frankly it was exhausting.

The plot also felt chaotic, as though action was added one scene after another without a clear construct. Perhaps this was the entire purpose as if to reflect the confusion and unpredictability of real life. Unfortunately, it seemed more like the overabundance of action was used to cover up the relationship flaws because the reader is too busy being inundated with everflowing events. Not to mention the immitation rival gang that read a little stereotypical imo compared to the rest of the characters. It also didn't help that certain events/situations were completely illogical and demanded a large amount of suspense of disbelief.

That said, the true villains were nicely constructed and just plain awful without ever seeming over the top. They represent every disgusting and horrifying thing that nightmares are made of. They deserved every wicked thing Havoc had planned.
