WOW

I am obsessed. Thank God there's a second book.

The only thing I didn't like about this book was that
Spoilerit was really sexual in a way that I was unprepared for, and the attempted rape on Amy really didn't seem to affect her at all
but that was literally all. This is a fast-paced novel with romance and plot twists and action at every turn. I loved it!

Amy and her parents are frozen cargo on a ship heading deep into space to a new planet. Elder is one of the generations living and working on the ship, and is destined to become the next leader of those people after the current leader, Eldest. When Amy is woken up early, she is a catalyst for Elder to start questioning the tightly controlled society Eldest runs.

The narrative alternates between Amy and Elder's voices, and centres around several mysteries - who is unfreezing the passengers, why the working population on the ship are so calm and compliant, what Eldest is hiding from Elder. Some of the answers to these questions are fairly obvious, and you wonder why it's taking Amy and Elder quite so long to figure them out - others are more of a surprise.

I quite enjoyed this, I liked the way that Revis makes a generational ship work, but I felt it was a bit slow at times, and I wanted Amy and Elder to just think about things more and get it all moving along.

So, in the first several pages of this book, Amy is frozen in a cryogenic box, but immediately realizes that she's still conscious. She is supposed to be frozen for three hundred years, and she's mentally awake. Her first few chapters are about her waking dreams and nightmares and thoughts, how scared she is, and her biggest fear- that her first year is not yet over, or the possibility that it's been 299 years. I was hooked, because this character would wake up and be mentally broken- a basket case.

NOPE. Never mentioned again.

So I was quite disappointed with that- I'm not sure why Amy was awake for the 250 years that she was frozen, nor why the author stressed that it would be three hundred and one years instead of the original three hundred,as well as a few other details that were handed out (why doesn't Doc have a successor?).

This novel wasn't awful, but I feel like the plot needed another combing through.

Across the Universe is the first a YA SciFi trilogy and it's nothing like I have ever read before. It's told between alternate POVs. Amy and Elder. Amy is frozen, set to be awake in 300 years but one night she is woken and is determind to find out who did it and stop them from awaking more of the frozen. Elder, the next leader of the Godspeeds helps Amy unravel the truth, all the while hiding a secret of his own.

At first I didn't really like the book. I found it to be a very slow starter but I was intrigued enough to keep on reading and I am so glad I did because this did a complete 180 and I ended up hooked and falling in love with story, setting and characters.

Amy and Elder are two very unique characters. Amy who is thrown in to this new world on the ship is scared but brave at the same time. She will stop at nothing to find out who is trying to kill the frozen. Elder is head strong and knews his in own mind. And that makes him different among the majority of the people on Godspeed. The connect between the two is a very nice and fitting one. It's not lovey dovey and it take a back seat to the story. There also a few other interesting characters, such has Eldest and Harley. Eldest is the leader of the ship and omg I hated him with a passion. He is cruel and ruthless. Harley, oh he is sweetheart. Loyal to both Amy and Elder.

Across the Universe is very unique and a first for me. I have never read a book set on a spaceship before and after the rocky start I didn't expect to enjoy it as much I did. I was really intrigued by Godspeed and the history behind. Beth is just such a fantastic writer that with her words you can really feel that you there on Godspeed with the characters. I felt the emotions from the characters jumping from the pages. I could see everything as clear as if I was watching a movie. Beth just has a way with words.

The biggest thing that really got me hooked was the mystery part. Following the characters as they unravel secrets from past and present and trying to find the killer on the ship. And let me tell you I was NOT expecting it! And the ending OMG wasn't prepared for that! I am really excited for A Million Suns and I highly recommend Across the Universe who likes there stories a little bit different.

Why did I want to read this book? Well look at that cover! It's so beautiful and even more so in person! The summary just adds to the interest.

First, I didn't like that on the back of the ARC it compared this book to Titanic. I think that comparing something to something that was really amazing is very risky, mainly because someone will expect a lot from it. That's how I felt with this. I saw that and my expectations went waaay up. It's such a small thing, but for me it definitely changed how I felt about the book.

Next, I thought the plot idea was very unique. I have never read a book about being in space. The whole idea of it was extremely interesting. Not only did it entertain me, but it made me think too. One of the major things that I wondered while reading this was this: Would I go crazy being locked in a spaceship for my whole life? I definitely think that Across the Universe had an amazing plot and it really left the reader with some things to think about and learn.

The characters in this book were really great. I felt like Elder was characterized so wonderfully and he kept me guessing. Even when I thought I knew him, he surprised me. His whole history and the way he was raised made it fascinating to see what decisions he would make next. Amy wasn't as great as Elder, but I liked to read about her too. She showed the reader what it would be like to be uprooted and put into a place she didn't want to be or know much about. Amy was so incredibly relate able because she truly represented me in that situation.

Overall this was a breathtaking debut novel for Beth Revis and I am excited to see what she has in store for the sequel.
