this is well-written and i do want to check out more of yiyun li’s stuff. however, there’s something about the whole story that feels empty. i don’t know if it’s the choice in telling the story of the girls’ fallout in retrospective or if it’s simply the plot, but it just fell flat for me. i just didn’t really care for their friendship or the fallout or everything else. i do, unfortunately, have to agree with the comparisons to my brilliant friend, but only, i think, in a very watered down version. if you really want to read about obsessive friendships and the complex relationship between two women throughout their tumultuous life i do think you’re better off checking  ferrante.
again, this isn’t a bad book and it is well-written, as i’ve read it almost in its entirety in a single day. i just had higher expectations going in.
