If you think you might like this book, you'll like this book.
The recollections are artfully arranged so you can see the contradictions, the gray areas, and how people react to one another's claims, as if they were in the same room. I like the movie, but I got a much better handle on how it was made, what it meant for those who made it, and how it became what it is today. I also learned more than I expected to about Linklater's background and how he got to the place where making Dazed was possible.
It's not a straightforward story, but it is a good one. There were so many times I had to stop and tell my wife an anecdote or text a friend about it. It reads fast for its length, and is well worth the time investment.

I am a huge fan of Dazed and Confused and I was thinking “Does there really need to be a whole book about this movie?? What is there to know?”
I am here to tell you, yes!!
This was everything I didn’t know I needed. It delves into Rick’s career and first film, the casting process, the relationships behind the scenes, the fights with the studio, the soundtrack drama, the aftermath, and the legacy of Dazed. So so good! This is a must for any fan of the movie or film in general.

An absolute delight cover to cover. There should be an oral history written about all of my favorite movies.
Although I hadn't seen this film in ages, when I heard about the book, I was intrigued. That being said, I didn't expect much. It is, however, surprisingly poignant.
The various people interviewed for the oral history are reminiscing and reflecting about a formative time in their life, and that itself is powerful. The exploration of how a person crafts an artistic vision and brings it into creation is also really interesting.
There is also a lot to be said about nostalgia. The director thought he was making an "anti-nostalgia" film because "the '70s sucked," but it's deeply nostalgic. When you're a teenager, everything feels far away and time moves slowly, but when you're an adult looking back, you see how fleeting that time is. There's a tenderness to the idea of adolescence, even if that tenderness feels more like pressing a bruise, and the author (and many people interviewed) argue that is what makes Dazed so beloved.
I rewatched Dazed shortly after reading the book, and it was a lot of fun to have the behind the scenes info as I did.
I debated giving this book a 5 because I think it's a pretty perfect example of an oral history, but 5s, for me, need a personal connection that is not quite there in this one. But in its genre, for sure a 5, and outside of that lens, definitely a holistic 4.5.

The making of Dazed and Confused seems like it went exactly like you'd imagine - a bunch of kids out of control, forming into cliques and getting in trouble. As a result, this history is highly entertaining. Assuming, of course, you have any interest in the subject matter.

What better way to engage in some 90’s nostalgia than reading an oral history of a 90’s movie steeped in 70’s nostalgia? (Though, it should be noted that Linklater set out to make an anti-nostalgia film. Oops.) Daze and Confused is one of my all time favorite movies and I was so excited to get this book from Harper Perennial.
Alright Alright Alright was such a fun, satisfying, comfort read. They had so much fun making this movie, but it wasn’t without its behind the scenes drama. I really enjoyed this oral history and now I definitely need to rewatch Dazed.

Rad. All movies should have an oral history. Super cool hearing individual’s thoughts who worked on Dazed and behind the scenes things you wouldn’t know.
