This might be best reserved for an LA-phile or completest in all things related to Los Angeles. With only a slight interest about LA (real, historical, and imagined) these various essays never really pulled me in. Though he does reference Mike Davis as one of his own inspirations, it doesn’t reach that depth of insight.

My daughter started going to UCLA so I wanted a book to give me a sense of the history of LA. While this book didn't cover traditional history, it did cover a number of important developments in LA in the 20th century that are a better guide to understanding "what is LA".
My only criticism of the book is that the author covered 3-4 topics in a chapter and would often seem to take a right turn into another topic in the middle of a story and never come back.

Must read for Angelenos!! Great insight into how this wonderful city came to be what it is today.
