5/5 world-building: ahh the world that Roth created in this duology was so well thought out, creative, imaginative, and beautiful. All throughout the book, her imagery kept the story alive & playing out in my head.

4.5/5 characters: each character was so complex and different, and I feel like some part of each character people can relate to. Cyra’s (one of the main characters) inner battles and ending was perfect.

4/5 writing: this is the reason it took me two months to finish this book. I do like Veronica Roth’s writing style - it’s very complex and well thought out - however, it’s very dense. And because of this, I found it hard to read past one or two chapters at a time. But perhaps her writing is meant to be enjoyed over time rather than rushed through.

I was really loving the first half of this book but it just .... died halfway through.
slow-paced
adventurous dark emotional tense

Veronica Roth has this way of spinning a story so that it grips you whole, captivating you from the first word to the last. Experienced this with both the Divergent series and now the Carve the mark one. Thankfully, this time I didn't end the series sobbing - yay she spared us *happy dance*
