- This book felt like unnecessarily long smut with an attempt to have a plot in it.
- The rape within the relationship is brushed off and not taken seriously. Hypothetically, If say one of the characters had a CNC kink, there needs to be a discussion about it. But here the Emperor just violently rapes Chu Wanning. Very irresponsible to glorify abuse and the lack of consent is appalling. The descriptions are also very graphic.
- This is a teacher-student relationship which are tricky to write. It's okay for Mo Ran to have a crush on Chu Wanning. But the fact that Chu Wanning at 25 had a crush on a 15 year old? No that's pedophilia. To avoid this, Chu Wanning's attraction should've started when Mo Ran was around 25 so it did not feel like he was groomed into it.
- Shi Mei's attraction to Chu Wanning made no sense even with the background storpy. Felt OOC even with the backround information. Why does everyone want to rape him?
- Shi Mei as a villain did not entice. It was a reveal that made me face palm instead of experience an interesting revelation. Essentially felt like he was chosen through "who would be the least expected character to be the villain?" And then try to justify it somehow.
- Terrible plot and conflict resolution. Everything felt too coincidental. The plot-twists made the novel worse.
- Very misogynistic. All women characters either weak, feeble, sluts, or prostitutes. Never given any respect
- What was the point of revealing that Chu Wanning was a wood spirit? If you removed the whole spirit thing from the novel it wouldn't have changed much in the grand scheme of things. Felt like the author wanted to have every little thing connected to the main characters no matter If it was necessary or not.
- The reveal that Mo Ran is from the Bone Butterfly Sect made no sense. Who from his family would've been one? It is also mentioned to be super rare so was everyone from his family like that? Then the fact that he didn't know about it until the last minute: The amount of times that he fucked Chu Wanning should've made that man be basically on steroids. The whole you can boost your cultivation by having intercourse with someone from the Butterfly Bone Sect suddenly doesn't apply to Chu Wanning? Felt like an after thought and easy way to write the ending.
- Not a minus but Xue Meng felt to be very similar to Jiang Cheng from MDZS.

However, I'm treating this a basically a dead-dove in my ratings and review because there were parts that I really did like and I don't believe this book was written to be ethical. If interested I strongly recommend you look up the content warnings.
Book 1: Different Paths Ch 1 - 97 -- 4 stars
Not as angsty as I thought it was gonna be but still so good!!
Book 2: Same Destination Ch 98 - 211 -- 3.5 stars
Still not as angsty but there were lots of great moments however it did get a bit slow it some places.
Book 3: Decisive Battle Ch 212 - 311 -- 1.5 stars
So there lots of really boring parts, some really messed up parts that made me legitimately feel uncomfortable, and then there were a few good parts.
Also Xue Meng best boi
Did I try and binge through this once the english edition was confirmed and the human translations where gonna be taken down? Absolutely yes. Will I still spend way too much money to get my hands on the official english copy? Also yes.
Definitely a book that has better characterization than plot. Plot doesnt really take over until shit hits the fan at the end of book 2/beginning of book 3, and then it just kept going. My only gripe is that the ending felt a bit Deux Ex Machina, a bit sudden, although that could be because reading a fix of human and machine translations doesnt quite lend the nuance required for foreshadowings.
Mo Ran - the dumb husky question, and exquisite example of being the most hated most vile emperor, a fucked up individual with lots of war crimes under his belt, spending the rest of the book crawling his way back towards redemption and character growth after his rebirth and realizing that there is more happening behind the scene pulling at his strings than he thought. Brings forth the fun question of whether all of your actions are your own, and if not, whether that excuses your actions anyway.
Chu Wanning - the cold aloof white kitty with a very soft squishy belly, so smart and yet so dumb at the same time. Definitely needed lessons on how to act like a normal functioning human being, and honestly considering his original story it makes sense. Too willing to make silent sacrifices! Please take care of yourself as well!
Characters honourable mentions:
Xue Meng - assigned baby phoenix by author, adorably naive, please never change
Shi Mei - assigned white Japanese Spitz by author, despite not showing up much you can still fit so much character in one person?? Also raises very interesting questions re: personhood
Mei Hanxue - I appreciate your dedication to be a shit disturber on purpose.
Xue Zhengyong and Madam Wang - wins the award for the most healthy parents Ive seen by far in any danmei
Favourite Arcs:
- Ghost bride! Babies first mission out
- Xia Sini - baby deserves all the love and affections and the carefreeness of childhood
- Descent into hell - pain pain pain
- Farming domesticity - simultaneously very very soft and also filled with so much Unresolved Sexual Tension
- The Love Confession - simultaneously a sense of Relieved Finally + anxiety because there is A Lot of pages left
