"Shizun, pay attention to me."

This was amazing. No character truly is as you first see them, and they all have reasons for doing what they do. Dubiously good reasons sometimes (both in terms of being positive and being sensible), but definitely reasons. This book is enormous, but I love it. Also, Chu Wanning is basically a semi-feral cat and I am here for it.

This took me almost a year to read (it's HUGE and I kept stopping and starting) and I think it made me go through every emotion ever. I cried A LOT. I definitely understand why this novel resonates so heavily with so many people. It makes you feel everything so much.

I'm won't lie, I had to read most of this using the only available MTL version since it hasn't been fully translated yet, which I think confused me quite a bit. I'm sure a lot of the detail was missing in translation because of this, which is a shame since the world building is quite intricate in this novel, and every detail counts.

That being said, I loved the characters in this a lot (especially Chu Wanning and Xue Zheng Yong!), and the strongest point was the development of each of the characters, particularly Mo Ran for obvious reasons. Reading the way his character changes and develops throughout this was really satisfying. The angst was super heavy, but also really well done. I genuinely enjoyed this a lot.
