For what it is-- it is great, but it is very much a children's book and I didn't realize that until I read it.
As a sister to a deaf woman I really appreciated this book and the fact that it helped to spread accurate information on the deaf community. It’s so important. I really would have loved an epilogue showing the characters a few years later.

"It's not hearing loss - it's Deaf gain."
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐½
I've been burnt before by romance books, which is why they aren't usually my to-go genre. Even so, I put this book in my TBR as soon as it came out: representation matters!
Lilah is a teenage girl who is hard of hearing. While her friends are making plans for the summer, she decides to go back to Deaf camp as a counselor. What follows is a transformative summer that sets her on a path of self-discovery and, needless to say, a summer of love at Grey Wolf Camp.
Though the book is targeted to YA audience and features a linear plot with somewhat simple characters, I think a lot of romance fans will enjoy it. Even if romance isn't your favourite genre, if you are interested in learning more about Deaf culture, this is a book you shouldn't miss.
I'm looking forward to reading more from this author, and I'm glad to see that she has already written another book.
I honestly can't think of anything I didn't like about this book: it was entertaining, educational, and a guilty pleasure in between my other reads. It deepened my understanding of Deaf culture without coming across as preachy. I don't understand the reviews that suggest otherwise. The only reason I can critically imagine for those comments is that some people simply don't want to change their ways or be politely being called out. It's a reflection of how some of us in the hearing community resist being inclusive, expecting others to adapt to an ableist world instead.
Because, honestly? If you can't read a book from the perspective of someone who is hard of hearing, who shares her joy and her challenges, and shares some very basic information (some of which, by the way, should be common sense) - well, I don't think the book is the problem.
We need more representation, we need more inclusiveness. This book is a solid start.
cute summer camp romance
This was a very sweet novel about growing up and finding your place. It was the first novel I’ve read with a deaf MC. I think the author very deftly wove together what it means to discover your place in a world that many people aren’t quite familiar with. It was a YA plot for sure with the summer romance, but still very cute.

Incredible representation! Likeable characters and well-researched information about the D/deaf community.
