A coming of age story with multi faceted and multi dimensional characters and a sweet teenage summer love story. This is a pretty easy read but with a lot to share and teach about deafness and the wide spectrum in which it exists without weighing the story down with facts and figures.

3.5 stars. A cute story that raised a number of issues that face those who are deaf/hard of hearing, and how to find your "voice".

As someone who is hoh/deaf this book was especially special to me. It truly means something that i read (and enjoyed) a YA romance book. The author introduced deaf culture in a very digestible manner for both hearing and deaf audiences. I was impressed by her method of covering deep and essential topics including a well written experience of feeling “in between worlds” which i understand oh too well. I feel a special connection to Lilah’s character as it felt like a rare reflection of myself. My only qualms are, seemingly because it is YA, the occasional jumbled sentence and the plot seeming a little rushed in some pieces with a majority of the arcs occurring at the end. Either way I am grateful that this book exists and it is a new sweet sweet favorite. ♡

Sortino made some excellent points on situations that deaf or hard-of-hearing people experience that I never thought of-dealing with police, being arrested, and dating (which can all be traumatic experiences). However, the audio made the character seem whiny and weak and it was difficult to listen to. I did appreciate the author's note and wish more authors would explain their thought process going into writing a novel as it is fascinating.
