Powerful story of Selma voting rights movement. Excellent memoir for younger readers to learn more about one young person's involvement in the movement.

This serves as a great way to introduce and begin a discussion about Selma and civil rights with middle schoolers and teens. My almost 11 year-old is going to read it next.

The pictures in this book made this book even more heartbreaking. This is for young kids but I would recommend this to adults as well just because it reads from her perspective as a young teen which adds to the history and feeling of the book.

Great, quick read! Lynda Blackmon Lowery’s story of marching to promote voting rights for black Americans as a 14-15 year old. She went to jail many times during that period of her life and was badly beaten by police officers prior to marching in the 1965 Selma Voting Rights March. I think it’s important to learn about this history and to think about how it wasn’t long ago that egregious acts of racism were too much of a norm. I’m especially impressed to think of the followers of MLK who followed methods of non-violence even when they were being beaten and racial slurs were constantly thrown their way. I got this from a little free library last night & I’m excited to keep it in my classroom and recommend it to my students

A good look at a young girls view on obtaining voting rights. Although written for a younger audience, it painted a strong portrait of a turbulent time in our history.

This is an easy NF book for middle schoolers to learn a little about the Civil Rights Movement and the Selma march.
