She returned her attention to whatever she had been doing on her laptop. He continued standing there, looking unsatisfied.

He lay down on his back. Next to him she continued typing. She seemed to be writing an email.

They looked at each other uncertainly then - Alice perhaps uncertain of what he was thinking, Felix maybe uncertain of what the question signified.

Something about Sally Rooney’s writing really speaks to me. Her characters aren’t particularly easy to root for, and yet I couldn’t put this book down.

If there's one thing Sally Rooney has made me realise, it's that I loveeeeeee character-driven books (so automatically, her books too) 💖

This book looks at relationships, life, sex, sexuality and questions around what it all means, while also exploring the difficulty of finding and being yourself. What I love most is how she captures all of this in a way that feels like you're looking at a mirror of society.

One of my favourite things about Rooney’s novels (and this one especially) is the awkwardness: the silences, the things left unsaid, the missed conversations, the moments where people just can’t bring themselves to say something or open up. It's so human. Additionally, her characters are flawed, imperfect, frustrating at times, but so real. They felt authentic and believable, even when they were unlikeable, pretentious or downright obnoxious, which was what made them so fascinating to follow.

Rooney has such a gift for writing characters that feel painfully real and I’ll never stop being fascinated by the characters she creates and the worlds she builds around them.
