This was incredibly depressing. Somehow, I had been under the impression that Chinese patriarchy was a little more passive than this, but nope! The activists described/interviewed here are giving up comfort and stability to push back against active repression, persecution, and harassment by the Chinese government. The things they went through during and after their imprisonment are not things I'm soon likely to forget. Whether or not you work on Women, Gender, Sexuality & History like I do, you should read this book.

essential read for a better understanding of china, internet censorship, + the general struggles of marginalised groups

great deep dive on how authoritarianism and patriarchy tend to come hand in hand in society, also interesting to see the role of the internet in both censorship + access to online activism for causes such as feminism, lgbt rights in china.

from the early days of modern feminist movements in China and its implications on the chinese government, its an important reminder of the constant struggle that marginalised groups continue to face on the daily in different parts of the world.

I don't know a lot about China, apart from what I learnt into schools and have picked up from online over the yearsβ€”I definitely didn't know about the feminist movement there. This is such an incredible insight into what's happening in China. It's introduced me to a number of badass women that I'll be following from now on.

It is an essential read for better understanding China, internet censorship and the struggle of marginalised people.
Hong Fincher stresses important topics, such as rights movements in China while diving into questions of authorianism and patriarchy and how those two work hand in hand in society.
In the centre of her research stands the arrest, detention and release of the "Feminist Five" in 2015. Hong Fincher uses their story, and what happened since then, to draw conclusions about China in specific and other authoritarian systems in general. It becomes clear that China's Communist Party relies heavily on the suppression of women and their role as reproductive tools as a key to enable stability in their soceity and of their regime.

This book is extremely important, not only for the study of feminism and human rights, but also for the examination of authoritarian regimes. It is scary how such big movements often only reach global audiences until later on, especially since the internet is heavily restricted in some parts of the world.
Hong Fincher gives voice to the women who have faced violence from the state for speaking up against discrimination and the regime. She also highlights the horrific tactics used by the Party to discipline against social activism.

This is a fantastic book and a call to arms for feminists around the globe to understand the challenges which women, queer people, and minorities face.
