This book had some really important things to say in terms of racism and social commentary, but every character felt like a caricature, because real teenagers don't really act and speak like the characters.
Read from the Provo library.

This YA thriller/mystery was a slower start for me, but I finished the last 50% in one sitting. It is a hard story to read because you can see how each and every part of it could happen in real life--and every bit of it is so tragic, the way that racism and Islamophobia shows up in large ways and in everyday dismissals of real concerns. So much of it can be connected to current events that it is hard to believe that it has been in production since 2019, which makes it even more tragic that it feels so familiar rather than a story tied to a specific time period. Highly recommend for 8th grade and up as long as students are prepared to confront the tough topics inside.

An excellent plot, driven by diversity and truth, this is a story based on a true story with some gut wrenching moments. In the sense of this being a young adult novel, I would agree; the execution falls more in line for perhaps middle school and early high school. Over that age or even that age, you will likely see the “twist” coming, so I would have enjoyed more of a story from the second narrator of Jawad and his past, instead of small pieces and instead of so much of the execution on the process of the “twist”. I put twist in quotes since I’m unsure if that was the purpose. But overall, a fantastic story, well written, specifically for the above mentioned age. I’m not a teacher but I would assume it would be a great curriculum read

Told with lots of different elements and points of view, time line is not contiguous which adds to the mystery.  Intense and has mature themes.

3.5 stars. This is a very pointed, unsubtle book. While I agree with the important messages about the rise of fascism and hate crimes, I would have liked to see more nuance and development of all of the characters and their story. Don’t miss the author’s note at the end.

This author is exceptional. I read internment a while ago and this author just cuts right to the heart of all that’s wrong in America today, particularly when people who are not born in this country come here. I had no idea this was in any way based on a true story and it broke my heart. I wanted to believe high school students weren’t capable of this level of bigotry but clearly all white people are in the systematic racism. It’s so engrained. Read this book. It is so special and a voice we all need to hear.

This book is a must read.

Powerful. Emotional. Raw. This book tore my heart out, in the best way. It was like a kick in the gut. But one I think every white person needs. A heart-wrenching and heavy story on the state of our world. Of bigotry. Of injustice. Of blind hate. But also,  of friendship, love, family, faith, and a dash of hope. Samira Ahmed, you are an incredible story teller. Thank you for sharing Jawads story. Thank you for sharing the truth of discrimination in our country. I think this story is going to stay with me for a long time.
