This is the 7th book by Nnedi Okorafor that I’ve read. This one is my favorite so far: the story and characters pulled me along so I finished faster than expected.

But something about Okorafor’s writing—the actual mechanics of it—sets my teeth on edge. I can’t fully explain or describe it, but it’s in every work of hers that I’ve read.

[audiobook]

i enjoyed the lore in this book a lot, particularly the magic system and the culture of leopard people focusing on community welfare instead of material greed. sometimes the characters felt a bit muddled in my head, but i liked them overall.

the ending honestly felt a bit anticlimactic, but i understand that not everything can be cleanly explained and squared away, so i will probably check out the rest of the series.

I really liked the first 80% of the book, especially the worldbuilding. However, the ending kind of fell flat for me. Major spoilers:
The big final battle was really anticlimactic. It felt like Sunny didn't even try to help in the fight with Black Hat, and then she defeated Ekwensu with hardly any effort.

A really easy read that throws you into a world of magic and danger. Set in Nigeria, I felt doubly thrown into the unknown in a wonderful way as I learnt about Okorafor's world of magic as well as life in Nigeria.

This is a really solid story of magic and coming into your own. The introduction to the world along with the main character works really well, and there are plenty of threads to unravel along the way. While the story feels very much like a young adult novel, it was still enjoyable as someone older than that age and there are lessons in it that can be useful to anyone at any stage of life.
